Statement of Purpose – Chemical Engineering

[My country] has made great strides in terms of its technical prowess over the past several decades, yet there is still considerable room for advancement in its chemical engineering field. In order to contribute to the advancement and modernization of this field, I hope to study in your graduate program of Chemical Engineering, obtaining a new conceptual understanding and professional knowledge in this field. Chemical engineering encompasses a variety of fields, including from biological chemistry and materials to environment management, and I am looking forward to learning more advanced knowledge in all of these areas. At the same time, studying in your program will give me a chance to broaden my outlook and learn of the differences between my native country and the West, which will prepare me to think more creatively and independently in my career.

My previous university studies of chemical engineering have prepared me for the challenge of joining your school. As an undergraduate, I frequently took practical courses such as Computer Programming, where I learned to solve problems by writing programs. I also enjoyed several experimental classes, such as Unit Operations and Process Control Lab, where I accumulated a great deal of laboratory experience. From working on projects and presenting the results, I developed good research skills and a better understanding of theory, as well as improving my confidence in public speaking.

In the university, I also made a point to take part in many extracurricular activities, despite my busy class schedule. For example, I volunteered in the Student Affairs Office, where I planned various activities, edited their weekly newsletter, and interacted with students from different departments and backgrounds. In addition, I served as a class representative for three years, dealing with students’ problems and bridging the communication gap between administrators and the professors. Outside of school, I worked part-time during vacations at a local bank, where I dealt directly with customers to help solve various banking problems that arose. I strongly believe that in the importance of being well-rounded, and these extra-curricular activities enabled me to develop into a skilled communicator with advanced leadership and interpersonal skills, all of which will prove tremendously useful in your graduate program.

I am confident that my academic background, combined with my experiences outside of the classroom, gives me the maturity that I need to succeed as an overseas student. Studying in your Master of Chemical Engineering program will give me a unique range of experience and expertise, and this will in turn give me a tremendous advantage in my career. If given the chance to enter your school, I would ideally like to take optional courses such as Public Utilities, Fundamentals of Electrochemistry, Energy Materials, or Synthesis and Application of Nanomaterials, as these are closely related to my interests. Moreover, I am looking forward to collaborating with students from different backgrounds, and the chance to improve my English abilities while learning to live more independently will be indispensable to me as I begin my career.

Regarding my future goals, in the short-term I plan to observe the development of chemical engineering in a different country. After completing my master’s degree and returning to my native country, I expect to work either in the hi-tech industry or more conventional industries. Chemical engineers with cutting-edge skills are in high demand here, and after completing your program I know that I will be armed with the tools I need to achieve considerable success and make a lasting impact in this field. I view this career as truly rewarding, and I thus sincerely hope you can grant me admission, as this is the next step towards my dream career.

Statement of Purpose – Public Health Management / Management

Ever since my childhood I have planned to follow in the footsteps of my parents, who devoted their lives to public health by running a long-term care institution. Having earned my bachelor’s degree in public health, I now plan to study management overseas, as I recognize the importance of good management in maximizing the services we offer and ensuring the continued success of this clinic. In the university, I learned about the European origins of social welfare, and how many of these laws and regulations have been exported and adapted around the world. This is what attracts me to Europe, as I am eager to learn from the examples set by European countries, and especially the UK. I am also looking forward to the chance to step out of my comfort zone and obtain a more cutting-edge and advanced education in management than I could receive in my native country, as this will give me a significant edge when returning home and resuming my career in public health and management.

I chose to study public health in the university because the public health curriculum was applicable to a wide range of areas, including the health care industry, public works and even public policy. Moreover, I was attracted to the public health department because of its focus on disease prevention as opposed to treatment and rehabilitation. The main courses focused on health administration and policy, and I had the chance to learn how theories can be applied in the areas of primary secondary, and tertiary prevention. At the same time, I took several courses on biostatistics, from which I used the scientific method to analyze and reach conclusions. Moreover, I also took a number of courses in management, policy, and administration, where I conducted several practical group projects that relate directly to my proposed master’s studies.

Outside of class, I completed my internship in a hospital’s planning department, where I helped plan various community activities. Indeed, a large portion of my education has come off campus. For instance, I attended several academic and industry conferences on long-term care institutions, where I talked with experts from academia and industry. I also worked at my parents’ long-term care institution, helping with elder care and assisting with accounting and policies. This institution has a nursing home, elder apartments, and respiratory care rooms, each of which requires different approaches to management. This is essentially why I have decided to specialize in management for my master’s degree, as I hope to learn new and useful approaches that I can one day apply to my family’s institution, developing services that will benefit both operators and consumers.

After completing your master’s program, I hope to begin working in the planning department of a large institute, such as a hospital or other enterprise. I hope to contribute to the strategy formulation, product planning, and promotion, as this would be an ideal way to accumulate experience and hone my organizational and logical skills. I am interested in the work of a planner, as this relates to the work I expect to do at my family’s clinic in the future. Therefore, after getting sufficient experience, I will return to my family’s clinic, integrating our internal resources such as the community care, institutional care, and medical care. I believe that, with my assistance, we can share human resources and reduce costs, becoming much more efficient and productive in the process. If I am to accomplish these goals, however, I know that I must acquire much more advanced knowledge of management, which is why I sincerely hope to have the chance to join your master’s program in the near future.

Statement of Purpose – Human Resource Management

As college and graduate degrees have become more important in the modern job market, it has become increasingly important to find ways to stand out and offer a competitive advantage. This is why I have decided to leave my native country and pursue a master’s degree in the UK, as the exposure to its world-class education system and the experience interacting with diverse students in a western environment will give me a crucial edge in my career. I am applying to your master’s program in Human Resource Management in order to prepare to help manage my parents’ company in the future. This company is currently struggling to grow and compete, and in my view this is due largely to human resources factors, such as recruitment/training programs and more comprehensive solutions for situations such as the retirement of key section managers. That is why I have decided to study Human Resource Management, as I want to help this company solve its current problems and deal with future problems of human resources management, which will be crucial to its long-term growth.

Currently, I am completing my final year in Goodwell University’s Department of Tourism, which is part of the management school. In this program, I had the chance to take the course Human Resources Management, in which I learned about the challenges of managing the human resources in organizations of different sizes. The various case studies we were assigned gave me a practical understanding of how to solve these problems. In addition, I had a number of related courses, including Management, Organizational Behavior, and Economics, from which I learned about the broader structure of organizations, grew more familiar with different approaches to management, and developed a foundation of knowledge in both theoretical and practical aspects of economics. Such wide-ranging professional knowledge is vital for a successful human resource manager, and I expect that this background will prove immensely useful when undertaking graduate studies of Human Resources Management.

Outside of class, I had an internship at a hotel, which proved among my most formative learning experiences. I received a great deal of help and guidance from the human resource section there, and as a result I came to better understand the role played by HR personnel in recruitment and training, which includes helping newcomers adapt to the organizational culture and providing training on labour rights, teamwork spirit, language barriers, etc. By the end of my internship, I had a newfound appreciation for the importance of human resource managers, and it was at this time that I began preparing to pursue graduate studies in this field.

In 2014, I had the chance to travel to the UK on a study tour, an experience which significantly broadened my horizons and changed my outlook. I made friends with people from different cultures, which inspired me to explore the world more. In the previous summer vacation, I went backpacking with a friend in the USA, and I thus have considerable experience adapting to new situations and facing the challenges of culture shock. In addition to these trips, I have used my free time to improve my language skills, which are crucial to both the hospitality industry and the HR industry. Aside from studying English, I have been learning Korean, and I obtained a certificate for the Test of Proficiency in Korean. Now, I am eager to pursue more formal and long-term studies in the UK, as I view this as the first step toward becoming a true citizen of the world.

Regarding my future goals, in the short-term I plan to devote all of my energy to studying in your master’s program and cultivating expertise of Human Resources Management. In the medium-term, I plan to earn my CIPD certificate and then return to my native country to begin my career. Eventually, I would like to work in an international hotel, honing my practical skills and applying the professional knowledge that I have accumulated. Besides the HR department, I also hope to learn from the T&D department how to come up with comprehensive courses for different departments. After accumulating sufficient experience, I plan to work in my parents’ company and learn to run the company. I will apply what I learnt to planning a more comprehensive HR program to solve problems and enable this company’s continued growth and expansion. A master’s degree in Human Resources Management from your university will open new doors for me and enable me to achieve any goal that I set for myself, and I am therefore very much looking forward to the opportunity to begin learning from and contributing to your program.

Statement of Purpose – Child Psychology / Developmental Psychology

The modern world differs greatly from the world in which humans evolved, and children therefore naturally face many difficulties in adapting and learning to cope with this reality. I am eager to pursue a career in child and developmental psychology in order to help children with behavioral and developmental problems, as I believe that I can have a great influence on society through such a role. In order to prepare for this career, I have decided to continue my studies in the USA, where the academic programs in psychology are much more advanced in comparison with my native country. Therefore, I am applying to your post-graduate program for the full-time taught course in September 2018.

In the university, I built a broad foundation of essential psychology-related knowledge in courses such as General Psychology, Psychology and Education, Practices in Guidance, Social Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Abnormal Psychology and Psychology of Gender Roles. In my sophomore year, when taking the course Childhood Psychology, I realized that I had found the area of my true passion. I learned how relatively young the field of child development is, and I came to understand how complex child development truly is. In truth, children’s development can be shaped by genetics, parenting, personal experiences, friends, family relationships and school, and any approach to child development must take all of these factors into account.

My own education was supplemented by extensive involvement in extracurricular activities, which I view as a very important component to the learning experience. I joined the Piano Club and Dance Club, where I met many classmates from different departments. After school, I took up a number of home tutoring positions teaching children ranging from kindergarten to primary school age. Each of these cases was a unique and important learning experience. Those children often could not receive sufficient love or attention from their family, and it caused them mental disorders, personality problems or deviant behavior. I tried to accompany them through these difficulties, yet I quickly found that I lacked the professional knowledge necessary to do so, which is one of the factors inspiring me to study abroad.

After graduating, I decided to go to the UK for six months and visit my sister, who was on a work holiday there to improve her English. Living overseas broadened my vision and gave me a chance to consider my long-term goals and how I would achieve them. After returning home, I immediately began working in a combination coffee shop and bookstore, where we not only served adults but also offered special meals, toys and books for children. I learned to deal with different types of people, yet I also saw firsthand how the stress people experienced in their daily lives resulting in them behaving negatively toward the children around them. In this way, this job has given me a new perspective about the challenges of child development in my home country.

Now, having matured into a competent and confident adult with not only extensive academic experience related to child development but also considerable work and extracurricular experience, I believe that I am in an ideal position to begin post-graduate studies. I have been studying English in preparation for going abroad, and after reviewing your curriculum online, I firmly believe your master’s program is ideal for expanding my knowledge of development and counseling while improving my research skills. After completion of my studies, I hope to get an internship in the USA to gain practical experience. Then, I will return home, working to obtain my psychologist license and eventually pursuing my ultimate goal of becoming a youth psychologist. By devoting my career to this area, I hope to bring a fresh perspective to psychological approaches to child development in my country, and I will be able to apply what I learn not only in my career but also when raising my own children in the future.

Statement of Purpose – Sports Management

I am applying to your Master of Sports Management program with the goal of building upon my previous experiences and preparing for my career. I studied Sports Medicine in the university due to my longstanding interest in sports. When doing my internship at the local YMCA, I had the chance to learn about health promotion for the elderly, and I came to see that this industry is poised for considerable growth. From this experience, I understand that the best way to keep elderly people healthy is to focus on preventing accidents or diseases. Unfortunately, there is a scarcity of professionals in this industry, and this is why I hope to acquire a more thorough understanding of sports management in your graduate program, as I hope to fill this gap and become a pioneer in this field in my native country.

My university studies give me a good foundation of knowledge on which to base more advanced studies. Through core courses I have learned a lot about sports protection, fitness and weight training, as well as taking optional courses related to sports management. Meanwhile, I was also very active in extracurricular activities in order to build a broader perspective and more practical skills. For example, I was active in the Student Union, I joined the school orchestra, and I served as a Teaching Assistant in my department as well as a leader in the department’s Sports Medicine Camp. In addition, I was a member of the Sports Service Society, and I collaborated with other members to help with elderly fitness drives and sanitary education in remote areas.

As mentioned above, my career goals began to really take shape during my one-year internship as an Administrative Assistant at the YMCA. My core duties there included organizing and implementing conferences and teaching certificate lessons. I was also responsible for promoting activities, contacting students and teachers, and arranging various activities. For instance, I planned many free elderly health-related activities in cooperation with the local municipal government, including an International Elderly Day with hundreds of student volunteers and drives to measure blood pressure and encourage the elderly to be active and explore nature. In the process of working on these events, I developed my leadership and organizational skills, and I have gotten a taste of what I expect to do for my future career.

Now, I believe that I am well-prepared for the challenge of going overseas and studying Sports Management at the graduate level. I previously worked as a research assistant at Goodwell Medical University’s Institute of Neuroscience, and I thus have experience at integrating, collecting and analyzing data, which will help with my postgraduate dissertation. I am eager to contribute my knowledge and experiences to your classes and research projects while also learning from the many talented students and professors in the program. After completing my studies, I hope to gain a place in a governmental sports institute in my native country, where I aspire to raise awareness about the benefits of sports for people of all ages, and especially the elderly.

My ultimate goal is to combine sports with elderly fitness promotion in order to essentially make a new industry. I want to build elderly communities and set up service stations for the elderly to help them have care service even in their own homes and organize activities periodically to replace the present elderly care centers. That way, the elderly can maintain their relationship networks through exercise. Accomplishing these goals will require advanced management abilities, and I thus find your master’s program an ideal setting for my further studies.
