Statement of Purpose – Design Strategy / Design Management

Throughout my life, I have been drawn to the arts and the process of creation. I enjoy exploring diverse ways of self-expression, and I find great inspiration in the creations of others. After majoring in Sculpture in the university, I worked at an art gallery and did public relations for local artists. In the process, I have seen firsthand the challenges and opportunities of the arts and design industry in this country. I now hope to explore the business side of this industry further and contribute my skills to bridge the gap between designers and those who can market and sell their work. This is the basis of my decision to apply to your MA Design Strategy (Design Management) program.

The design industry in my native country is cutting edge and full of potential. However, it is important to augment the business side of this industry in order to expand the reach of local artists. In my work, I have seen that I am good at coordinating and promoting designs, and I hope to undertake graduate studies that will enable me to develop a career in design management. There are no suitable graduate programs in this area where I live, however, so I have decided to study in the UK, a country known for cutting-edge design and excellence in education. By studying in your highly regarded, well designed Design Strategy MA program, I hope to learn about the process of creating brand value and develop the professional skills that I will need to work in design consultancy or another similar role in the emergent creative economy of my country.

My previous experience gives me a unique perspective and a good foundation of knowledge that I can use as a graduate student. After earning my Bachelor’s degree, I began working at an art gallery as a curator. Here, I was introduced to the business side of a field that I had previously only explored from the perspective of an artist. I was intrigued by the disconnect between these two sides and the discrepancies between the goals of the artists and the needs of the gallery. This led me to take a position in public relations, helping local artists to present their works in media and venues that would best suit them and allow them to grow. Such work gave me an understanding of the challenges of balancing artistic and financial considerations, yet it also inspired me, as I began to see how I could make a difference in the lives of artists and thus the culture of my country as a whole.

It is clear to me, however, that passion alone is insufficient for achieving this goal. This is why I have decided to apply to your master’s program, as I am eager to complement my artistic background and work experience with more formal training related to the business side of this industry. After researching a number of possible graduate programs, I find your MA Design Strategy program closely suited to my needs and goals. I am looking forward to learning from the experienced and esteemed professors while working alongside students from different backgrounds who bring different perspectives and life experiences. I am particularly interested in learning new approaches to creating brand value, as there are few programs in my native country that touch on this area. In short, I know that going abroad for my graduate degree will allow me to broaden my horizons and look at my future career with a new set of eyes, and I am thus highly motivated to get all I that I can from your program.

Statement of Purpose – Economics

I am applying to your MSc Economics program for fall 20XX intake. With my background of academic and professional experiences, I am confident that I have what it takes to stand out and excel in your program.

My interest in economics can be traced back to the influence of my grandfather, who has owned a shop since the 1940s. As a child, I often visited him and enjoyed helping in his shop. I saw how he decided what products to stock, how he satisfied customers, and how he negotiated prices to remain competitive. When studying economics in school, I was able to relate the concepts and theories I learned to their practical, real-life implications in my grandfather’s shop. As I ventured further into this field, I grew interested in how these concepts apply not only to small or large firms but also to entire nations and the global economy. Later, majoring in Economics at Goodwell University, I grew interested in how these concepts apply not only to small or large firms, but also to entire nations and the global economy.

Upon graduating from the university, I joined a transport organization, where I was able to apply what I had learned as an undergraduate. As a Trainer in the Shipping Division, I undertook various cost control measures to improve productivity and ensured that the safety guidelines were met. In the process, I got hands-on experience and learned about how a large-scale firm such as this manages its economic affairs. This has been a very instructive experience for me, as I have learned to adapt to a professional environment and have seen that, through hard work, I am capable of achieving any goal that I set for myself.

In my personal as well as professional affairs, I am driven by a belief in the importance of generosity and giving back to one’s community. I believe that the true meaning of life lies in giving happiness to others while following your own ambitions at the same time. In keeping with this spirit, I have recently begun devoting my free time to volunteering in the National Association of the Deaf, where I tutor students and work to raise awareness and funds. This experience has also influenced my career goals, as I hope to venture into teaching and have a positive impact on young minds. I am convinced that the subject of economics is relevant to virtually every aspect of people’s lives; this is evidenced by the work of Muhammad Yunus, founder of the Grameen Bank, who has proven that economists have the power to affect meaningful change in their communities. I therefore view a profession in economics as a very meaningful and inspiring career.

Although the education I have received thus far has been top notch, I am determined to study abroad for my master’s degree, for a number of reasons. The UK has a well-deserved reputation for excellence in terms of its advanced academic programs, especially in economics, and it is an important leader in the global economy. It Is vital that I gain international experience and familiarize myself with different cultures at this stage in my career, and the diverse environment of your school is therefore ideal for me. Perhaps most importantly, I know that I need to challenge myself if I am to continue progressing and reach my full potential in this field. I am therefore committed to joining your challenging and renowned program, putting forth all of my effort to not only receive the best education possible but also contribute to your dynamic and diverse academic environment.

Statement of Purpose – Finance

Financial professionals in the modern age play an important role in shaping the global economy and the future direction it will take. As I approach the end of my undergraduate education and consider my future goals, it is clear that pursuing a master’s degree in finance would be the wisest choice. My interest in finance stems from a variety of factors. I have always had natural talents with numbers and analysis, and the field of finance thus naturally suits me. Professionals in this dynamic industry are limited only by their own creativity and analytical skills, yet, as the recent subprime crisis and Eurozone debt crisis have shown, this creativity must be tempered with foresight and a sound ethical foundation. The prospect of working in this industry on an international scale excites me greatly, and to achieve this goal I am applying to your master’s program.

Currently, I am completing my final year in the university, and I will soon earn a Bachelor of Accounting degree with a concentration in Finance from Goodwill College of Industry, which is among the most highly ranked colleges in my country. In this course of study, I have built an extensive foundation of knowledge in areas including financial analysis, investment, micro- and macro-economics, derivatives, and risk management. Meanwhile, I have also had the chance to take classes on marketing, management, and other business fields, which has given me an opportunity to hone my communication, leadership and organizational skills.  My overall scores have been quite strong, with especially high scores in finance-related courses, which is due to my strong interest in the subject.

During summer holidays I have applied what I learned in classes by working for three years in an accounting firm. This has been a wonderful complement to my studies, as it has refreshed my perspective and taught me about the realities of a workplace such as this. Most importantly, working in a real-world context has inspired me to get the most out of my education so that I may excel in my career. I also had the chance to do an internship in a multinational accounting firm, where I got acquainted with accounting software and had numerous chances to practice using English in professional contexts.

Now, I believe that studying in the UK for my master’s degree is the ideal next step for me. The UK boasts perhaps the most prestigious education system worldwide, and its reputable financial sector has avoided many of the pitfalls that have stricken other countries’. I am eager to further develop my foundation of knowledge the principles and practice of finance, learning from world-renowned instructors while interacting with top students from around the world. After completion of your program, I expect to possess highly practical financial skills and the flexibility necessary to work in international settings in the future. My career goal is to become a leading financial analyst in my country and develop a career that is rewarding in terms of both the financial and personal rewards.

Statement of Purpose – Telecommunications / Communication Engineering

The Information Age presents us with tremendous possibilities as well as unique challenges, and my decision to study communication engineering is motivated by a desire to contribute to the development of this industry in the future.

My undergraduate studies of communication engineering proved highly instructive and inspiring. Perhaps most importantly, the classes and laboratories I participated in helped to solidify my determination to devote my long-term career to this area. The classes I took gave me a firm grounding in the theory of electrical and communication engineering, and I was fortunate to study in a program that was forward-thinking, with professors who always pushed us to look to the future. In this environment, I was also surrounded by highly motivated and visionary students, who challenged me to rise to the best of my ability. As a result of my experience in the university, I never doubted that I would continue my studies beyond the undergraduate level, as I understand the unparalleled value of learning in a dynamic and research-based environment.

As I considered my options for postgraduate studies, the Master of Engineering in Telecommunications program at Goodwell University has stood out for a number of reasons. The interdisciplinary nature of the program is especially attractive to me, as this will give me a much broader, more practical understanding of all aspects of telecommunications, including the business and regulatory aspects as well as the engineering side. In addition, the hands-on focus of the program and the links to industry will prepare me for long-term success. With the inherently international nature of today’s telecommunications industry, it is important for me to study in an international environment away from my home country, and doing so in one of the top engineering departments in North America will certainly give me a unique advantage in my career pursuits.

After completing my master’s degree, I expect to apply what I have learned to drive the communications industry forward and thus benefit people and society as a whole. I will return to my native country and seek work in the rapidly developing telecommunications industry, where this is currently a strong demand for talented, experienced communication engineers, and especially ones with international experience. By working in this context, I am confident that I can distinguish myself as a leader in my profession and make many valuable contributions to the modernization of my country. This is a very exciting time to be working in the communications industry, as technology is evolving quickly and new applications are being devised constantly. If I can work at the cutting edge of this industry, I know that I will have a career that is enriching, meaningful, and rewarding in the long term.

Statement of Purpose – Music

My life’s passion has been music ever since I was old enough to sing. As I have grown and matured, I have been on a constant quest to explore new musical vistas and hone my own technical and composition skills. Now, having earned a degree in music and acquired teaching experience, I desire to challenge myself further by pursuing additional studies overseas. The music education in my native country is somewhat limited and not nearly as open or developed as it is in the USA, which is why I am attracted to the enriching, inspiring environment of your master’s program. In addition, I look forward to experiencing a new culture and interacting with diverse groups of people, which will broaden both my personal and musical horizons considerably.

As a young child, I often played the piano and sang songs with my mother. After learning the basics of piano, I soon began playing pop music by ear, and I gradually began adding my own flair to these songs and exploring my creative side. I was fortunate to have a mother who supported my passion for music, and she got me a composition teacher, which led to me focusing on composition in junior and senior high school. During this period, I mainly played classical music, which gave me a good foundation for my university-level studies. The numerous undergraduate classes I took on harmony, theory, music analysis, counterpoint, and composition opened my eyes to the vast possibilities I could continue to explore in the musical world. I especially enjoyed the regular one-on-one classes in the university, in which I got advice from instructors while discussing pieces from contemporary composers.

Many of the most instructive experiences have come outside of the classroom. For instance, in high school I participated in the Music Club as the lead singer and arranger, and I joined the Musician’s Association in the university, holding instructional camps for elementary school students. Throughout these years, I also performed solos and orchestral pieces at music festivals and concerts, playing various instruments and gaining invaluable experience. Meanwhile, I have also regularly taught private students in everything from composition and theory to ear training and technical skills. Such experiences have taught me to devise different teaching methods as appropriate for students of varying levels. For instance, I may let the students listen to J.S. Bach’s Chorale or Stravinsky’s Soldier’s Tale, then give them a chance to practice conducting in small groups with classmates. This has shown me firsthand the value of teaching, which makes me yearn for more teaching experiences in my future career.

My musical experiences have molded me into a multi-talented musician with teaching talents and a keen understanding of my own strengths and interests. This is why I feel well prepared to enter your graduate program of music. If accepted, I will devote my efforts to enriching my knowledge of music and composition, and I hope to focus on the area of contemporary music. I understand that studying at the graduate level overseas will present me with certain challenges, but based on my past accomplishments and struggles, I know that I have what it takes to overcome these and excel. After completing my studies, I plan to return to my country and seek a teaching position, with the goal of nurturing the next generation of musicians and inspiring others as my teachers inspired me.
