Statement of Purpose – Design
In the design industry in [my country], the designers seldom have direct contact with clients, as they tend to be focused exclusively on the content of their work. Instead, a salesperson communicates with clients and then relays the pertinent information and requirements on to the designer. The end result of such a system is that designers produce work in relative isolation of the actual needs of clients; the work, while of high quality, suffers from the obstacles presented by the lack of communication between designer and client. I have noticed such challenges in my own work, where the effectiveness of my designs is often hindered by a lack of direct communication with clients, which can result in differences between the clients’ expectations and the actual finished product. It is largely for this reason that I have decided to pursue a master’s degree in the USA, as I feel that the comprehensive education offered in such a setting will instill in me the fresh ideas and skills that will allow me to transcend the limitations of the design industry in [my country].
I earned my Bachelor degree in the Department of Advertising Design at Good University in 2000. This school is renowned in the field of design, and I learned about advertising design, illustration, sketching, and various other subjects related to this field. As I was initially relatively unskilled in design, I found the content quite challenging, but as I progressed, I found myself building skills and learning to creatively apply what I learned in classes. In 2003, I transferred to Great University’s Department of Communication Design. At the same time, I began working outside of school as a designer in an attempt to use the concepts learned in the classroom and develop practical experience in designing. I received high scores in the courses and gained considerable experience portfolios and research methodology. In addition, the courses tended to require a great deal of group work, and I was fortunate to refine my leadership skills during this time. Perhaps one of the most valuable aspects of my education was the opportunity to develop these skills and learn to share and mutually develop ideas with others
Since the year 2005, I accumulated a wealth of professional design experience, through which I have developed into a confident and effective designer. Upon graduating from the university, I decided to seek work in the design field instead of pursuing further study, as I was eager to apply the theoretical knowledge I had acquired in school in practical work settings. I initially worked as an entry-level designer at Good Design Co., Ltd. I then advanced to the position of Deputy Director in the Design Department of at Dream Design Company, where I was responsible for proposals, production, and communication with clients. Due to my effective performance in this position, I was offered the position of Creative Director at Five Design Co., Ltd., where I as in charge of monitoring design quality, submitting proposals, and communicating with clients. I was subsequently offered the advanced position of Senior Graphic Designer at Great Design Inc., where, as the top designer in the company, I had much flexibility and responsibility for designing and communicating with clients. In the past four years, I have acquired management and communication abilities, and I feel that my ability of communicating with customers and producing designs to meet their specifications is one of the most essential roles performed by a professional designer.
I have also become a member of my country’s Association of Graphic Design, in which I have been involved with design research sponsored by the association. I have repeatedly sought participation in design competitions both at home and abroad, in order to strengthen my abilities and further accumulate experience. As shown in detail on my curriculum vitae, I have earned more than twenty awards from several countries. Some of my works were retained as part of the permanent museum collections in these countries, for which I am very proud. These experiences have been extremely important in providing me with confidence and a broader viewpoint with which to approach the field of graphic design.
Although I have over a decade of experience in design, I have decided that good design skills alone are insufficient for achieving my goals. It is also important to have management and leadership capabilities, as well as an understanding of international cultures and markets. Perhaps most importantly, designers must have an awareness of how to best sell and market their work. In this way, designers are different than artists; designers must be capable of integrating and understanding the desires of clients, as the development of brand image is increasingly important. With good designs and extensive planning, it is possible to produce high quality work while meeting and even exceeding customers’ needs.
Despite the great talent in the design field in my country, there are few globally recognized names there. I have long believed that design industry in this country suffers not from a lack of talent, but from a dearth of complete planning and management. Therefore, my goal in pursuing advanced education in this field is to become one of the top designers in the world, and in this way, I hope to be able to contribute to the overall progress and development of the design industry in my country.
